Long respected for its musical roots, Lubbock is also home to theater and the visual
arts. From classical music to Tejano, and from museum collections to local artist
and artisans, cultural opportunities are showcased in a variety of venues.
Museums
The Museum of Texas Tech University

An educational, scientific, cultural, and research facility of Texas Tech University, the
museum includes the main museum, the Moody Planetarium, the Ranching Heritage Center,
research and educational elements of the Lubbock Lake Landmark, and the Natural Science
Research Laboratory. The museum boasts a collection of nearly 2 million objects.
Ranching Heritage Center

An outdoor exhibit depicts the history of ranching in America's West through the
restoration and furnishings of notable historic ranch structures. A living memorial
to the western frontier, the center includes 35 structures - from a half dugout (a
partially underground structure) to the richness of the grand Barton House - that have
been completely restored and moved to the site.

The museum features displays of the World War I, World War II, and Korean and Vietnam war
eras, as well as static aircraft and other vehicles. currently, one-half of the
air-craft on display are airworthy and fly regularly.
Performing and Visual Arts
Ballet Lubbock

A full-tome, paraprofessional school for classical ballet training and other dance forms,
Ballet Lubbock also maintains a performing ballet company for the benefit of the entire
South Plains area. The company's schedule includes an annual production of The
Nutcracker.
Cactus Theater

Restored to its 1940s decor, the Cactus Theater in the Depot District brings an air of
nostalgia to Lubbock audiences with live music productions, classic movies, theater, and
dance.
Fine Arts Center

The center features visual arts exhibitions from photography to sculpture.
Illuninance, a national photography exhibit, draws more than 1,500 entries from artists
nationwide. Visual Vanguards is a continuing series of exhibits that encourage an
appreciation of the cultural diversity of American artists. In 1999, the fine Arts
Center is scheduled to move to the historic Depot district, to be housed in the former
Fort Worth & Denver Depot building at 1801 Avenue G, along with 156 pieces of the
Buddy Holly Collection.
Hemmie Recital Hall

Hemmie Recital Hall, with its magnificent organ, is the site of more than 200 performances
each year. The performances, many free of charge, cover a diverse range of music,
including jazz concerts, opera productions, musical theater, recitals, and visiting
performers.

Landmark Arts galleries feature exhibitions of national, regional, and local artists, as
will as students and students and faculty of Texas Tech University. The galleries
include the Landmark Gallery, Studio Gallery, Print Room, SRO Photo Gallery, and Sculpture
Alternative Gallery.
Lubbock Arts Alliance

An Independent, nonprofit organization that promotes the arts in Lubbock and supports the
activities of individual arts groups, the Arts Alliance sponsors the annual Lubbock Arts
Festival and provides grants to local groups for program development.
Lubbock Symphony Orchestra (LSO)

LSO presents a full season of classical music, including six masterworks starring
internationally acclaimed guest artists and one pops concert. affiliated with LSO,
the Lubbock Youth Orchestra - with more than 50 junior high and high school musicians from
throughout the area - and the 100 preschoolers in the Suzuki program both offer a glimpse
of the next generation of classical musicians in Lubbock.
Lubbock Theater
Area theaters consistently offer outstanding productions with local amateur talent as well
as repertory theater. In addition to those theaters mentioned above, the following
