Transportation
Despite its population of approximately 195,000, Lubbock is not burdened with traffic
problems. In fact, with the Lubbock area's wee-designed and accessible
transportation infrastructure, drivers will find locales easily. City streets
crisscross the city on a grid thoroughfare system with numerical streets going east to
west, while north-south roads are in alphabetical order, Major locations within the city
can be accessed easily with a circumferential highway - Loop 289 - that connects the main
thoroughfares in all directions.
Right-of-way acquisition began in 1993 for a new east-west freeway that will connect
the growing retail and residential areas in southwest Lubbock with the downtown business
district, medical facilities, and Texas Tech University. Lubbock's highway system,
which includes Interstate 27 and numerous state highways, easily reaches hundreds of west
Texas and eastern New Mexico towns, as well as Texas' major metropolitan areas. In
addition, the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce is seeking to extend I-27 and numerous state
highways, easily reaches hundreds of West Texas and eastern New Mexico towns as well as

seeking to extend I-27, developing the highway as a major international trade corridor.
Also, with four airlines serving Lubbock, individuals can travel easily to places
anywhere in the world.

Located 10 minutes away from the downtown business district on Interstate 27, LIA offers
three commercial air carriers - American Eagle, Continental, and Southwest. LIA sees
an average of 35 daily arrivals and departures, and approximately 597,350 annual
boardings.
LIA also offers a full range of services for privately owned aircraft, including
maintenance, fueling, hangaring, and line services. On-demand charter and air taxi
services also are available.
As the hub of distribution activity for West Texas, eastern New Mexico, and western
Oklahoma, Lubbock is served by 10 air freight companies, including Airborne Express,
Federal Express, and UPS. The airport's grounds include 3,000 acres, with
approximately 750 acres available for industrial expansion, and the airport is an official
U.S. Customs Port of Entry.
LIA is developing an industrial park to serve the needs of new companies. Located
in the geographic center of the North American market, LIA offers ready land
transportation access to the East and West coasts, Mexico, and Canada.

Highways and Interstates
Interstate 27 connects the city with two major east-west highways connecting Lubbock with
Metro Dallas to the east and cities to the west include U.S. 62, U.S. 82, SH-114, and U.S.
84 North-South U.S. 87 provides connections to Midland/Odessa. Lubbock 289 encircles inner

Lubbock is served by the Citibus mass transit system, which covers 104 square miles
and offers 12 routes that connect all parts of the city. Citibus offers a fixed-rout
